Screenwriting exercise
EXt. School 3 PM
KATE, aged 7 runs across the playground dragging her bag across the floor, as the wind pushes her hair back. She zigzags through the crowd towards her MUM, things falling out of her pockets and bag as she goes.
Her MUM just looks down at her phone holding tightly to the lead of the dog trying to jump up the girl. KATE speeds up as she sees the dog, nearly tripping over her untied shoes.
She waves a leaf in her MUM's face as she takes her school bag from her quickly turning on her heel.
KATE quickly ties her shoes and chases after her shoving her stuff back into her pockets.
KATE
Mum! Wait for me!
KATE grabs the lead of the dog and starts to walk. MUM is talking on the phone.
KATE
Do you know what we did today? It was so cool. We made paper mache volcanoes and we get to paint them tomorrow!
MUM nods slightly whilst KATE skips along next to her, paying no attention to what is going on around her.
KATE
That girl Summer in my class has invited me to her birthday party. Mia said it will rain that day. I don't mind the rain though. Summer can be quite annoying at school but parties have cake and party bags so... Mum are you listening?
MUM
(looking at her phone)
Of course I am!
KATE
Well you didn't seem like you were listening! It's rude not to listen you know.
