The Ellington Kid (2012) Dan Sully
Narrative:
- Boys tell the story of a gang attack that happened in the restaurant where they are eating.
- A kid who was stabbed by the gang goes to the restaurant for safety, which is the inciting incident.
- The owner and the workers fight the gang to try and protect the kid.
- The boy eating tells his friend that the gang was turned into burgers, but later admits that he was lying about it.
- The owner then hints that this was actually the truth.
Genre:
- Social realism
- Based on a true story
- Set in a familiar setting to help people relate.
- Relatable characters, a lot of them are young lads
- References toward the random attacks against young people and minorities.
- Alley setting is expected for these types of films.
- Has a hint of dark comedy in the telling of the story by the way that the boys tell the story.
Representation:
- Gangs, violence and unexpected attacks.
- Young guys, over enthusiastic, gullible and naive.
- Ethnic minorities, violent, attacks against them.
Audience:
- Knives to boys chanting, confuses the audience.
- Contrasts the harsh story with the friendly over enthusiastic story telling.
- Positioned in the restaurant with all the characters, makes us feel closer to them.
- Get the hint that the men were actually killed, we know more than the characters.
- We see what happens to the gang through the face of the kid.
- No connection is made between us and the kid
- Left confused on what happened and whether the story was true.
Micro Elements:
- Opens with knife sharpening
- Flashes from the kid to the boys telling the story.
- Contrasts between light and dark.
- Narrators attitude contrasts the story
- Close ups
- Starts and ends with knife sharpening
- There is a lot of dialogue
- Flashbacks
- Pans from the boys to the shop owner.
- Acting follows the story the boys are telling.
- Focuses on the stabbed kids feet, shows the plain and dark setting.
- Close up on the blood
- Not really aligned with anyone.
- No speaking between any of the shop workers.
- Sound of knives.
- Music builds up.
I enjoyed the fact that the film had an unsure ending as it made it more interesting, and made you think more about the film once it ended.
In my film I'd like to have an uncertain ending to make it more interesting.
